Catheter-related bloodstream infections occurring in the intensive care unit (ICU) are common, costly, and a major cause of hospital morbidity.  For instance, each year, more than 1 million patients in U.S. acute-care hospitals and extended-care facilities acquire catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI); the risk with short-term catheterization is 5% per day. CAUTI is the second most common cause of nosocomial bloodstream infection, and studies suggest that patients with CAUTI have an increased institutional death rate.

Buckeye's MACROESISTM technology is applicable to active anti-microbial compounds and is ideal for delivering efficacious dosages in a non-invasive and safe manner.
